Mary Elizabeth Braddons (1837-1915) Eltern wurden geschieden, als sie drei Jahre alt war. Braddon arbeitete als Schauspielerin, um ihre Mutter Fanny finanziell zu unterstützen. 1860 lernte sie den Londoner Verleger John Maxwell kennen, dessen geisteskranke Frau bis zu ihrem Tod 1874 in einem Sanatorium in Irland lebte. Braddon wurde die Stiefmutter seiner fünf Kinder und sie hatten zusammen weitere sechs Kinder.

Daneben schrieb Mary Elizabeth Braddons ca. 75 Romane, der berühmteste ist Lady Audley's Secret.
