Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) wuchs in einer bürgerlichen protestantischen Familie in Dublin auf. Dort studierte er auch Französisch und Italienisch. Er lebte anschließend abwechselnd in Paris, Deutschland, Dublin und London, bis er sich 1937 endgültig in Paris niederließ. Er verfaßte zahlreiche Romane, Theaterstücke und Lyrik, die er anfangs auf englisch, später auf französisch verfaßte. 1948 entstand sein berühmtestes Stück 'En attendant Godot', für das sich bis 1953 kein Theater fand, das aber später zum Muster des absurden Theaters wurde. Beckett erhielt 1969 den Literaturnobelpreis.
