Rule, Britannia!

'Rule, Britannia!' ist eine der inoffiziellen britischen Nationalhymnen.

Das patriotische Lied wird z.B. während der Last Night of the Proms gesungen.

Das Lied hat einen starken Bezug zum British Empire sowie zur Royal Navy und zur 'British Army' und ist so auch Bestandteil des Musikprogramms zum Remembrance Sunday.

Der Text ist das gleichnamige Gedicht des schottischen Dichters James Thomson. Die Melodie komponierte Thomas Arne imm Jahr 1740.

Mit Britannia im Titel ist Britannia gemeint.

When Britain first, at Heaven's command

Arose from out the azure main;

This was the charter of the land,

And guardian angels sang this strain:

Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:

Britons never will be slaves.

The nations, not so blest as thee,

Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;

While thou shalt flourish great and free,

The dread and envy of them all.

As the loud blast that tears the skies,
