Apple Wassail
Der Apfelanbau spielt in England (Vereinigtes Königreich / Großbritannien) eine wichtige Rolle. Man denke nur an den Cider und an die berühmte Apple Sauce zum britischen Schweinebraten (Roast Pork).
Die 'Apple Wassail' ist ein alter englischer Brauch in den Apfelanbaugebieten in Südengland (Grafschaften Devon, Herefordshire, Kent, Somerset und Sussex).
Dabei werden im Winter - zumeist im Januar, z.B. an Twelfth Night - die Apfelbäume gesegnet und man bittet mit Brot, Cider und anderen Gaben an die Bäume um eine reiche Apfelernte im neuen Jahr. Verwendet wird die 'Wassail Bowl', die auch beim weihnachtlichen Wassailing eine wichtige Rolle spielte.
Der Brauch wurde erstmals 1585 in Kent dokumentiert.
Heute finden die bekanntesten Events am 17. Januar in Whimple (Devon) und Carhampton (Somerset) statt.
