The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond
'The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond' ist ein berühmtes schottisches Volkslied.
Das traditionelle Lied wurde erstmals 1841 veröffentlicht.
Im Zentrum des Lied steht der schottische See 'Loch Lomond'.
Hintergrund des Lieds ist wahrscheinlich der Jakobiten-Aufstand von 1745.
Dabei reisen auf der 'High Road' die nach den 'Show Trials' aufgespießten Köpfe der exekutierten Rebellen, während ihre Familien auf der 'Low Road' laufen. In einer alternativen Interpretation reisen die Seelen der Rebellen auf den unterirdischen Straßen der Feen (Fairies) und 'little People' von England zurück in ihre Heimat Schottland.
Die irische Variante des Lieds heißt 'Red is the Rose'.

Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

'Twas there that we parted, in yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomond,
Where in purple hue, the hieland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens, nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their grieving.
