John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) wurde als Sohn englischer Eltern im heutigen Südafrika geboren. Er studierte in Oxford Sprachen und beschäftigte sich eingehend mit Mythologie. Nach dem Kriegsdienst bekam er eine Anstellung beim 'New English Dictionary' in Oxford, später als Dozent in Leeds und Oxford.

J.R.R. Tolkien gilt als der Begründer der modernen Fantasy-Literatur.
