D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) war der Sohn eines Bergmanns und einer Lehrerin. Nach seinem Studium in Nottingham war er in einer Schule in Croydon bei London als Lehrer angestellt. 1911 musste er aufgrund seiner Tuberkuloseerkrankung den Schuldienst quittieren. Ab 1919 bereiste er mit seiner Frau Europa, Mexiko und Australien.

1924 tauschte Lawrence sein Manuskript von Sons and Lovers gegen eine Ranch bei Taos in New Mexico. Nach erneutem Ausbruch der Tuberkulose kehrte er nach Europa zurück und verbrachte seine letzten Lebensjahre in Italien. Er schrieb nicht nur Romane, sondern auch Gedichte, Essays, Reiseberichte und Theaterstücke. Thema seiner Werke ist oft die Beziehung zwischen den Geschlechtern, Erotik und Sex, was ihn zu Lebzeiten stark umstritten machte.
