Ian Richardson besuchte das 'College of Dramatic Art' in Glasgow und war lange Zeit bei der 'Royal Shakespeare Company'. Als er 1970 die 'Royal Shakespeare Company' verließ, erhielt er sofort die Hauptrolle in der BBC-Fernsehproduktion 'Eyeless in Gaza'. Seitdem arbeitete er abwechselnd für Bühne, Film und Fernsehen.
